ACT Sustainable Household Scheme

Full scheme available now. The scheme will run until 2026, unless extended.

You might be able to get a loan to improve your home's energy efficiency. Reduce your environmental impact with solar panels, batteries and other products. Eligible home owners can borrow up to $15,000. You have up to 10 years to repay it*. There's zero interest, and no upfront costs or fees.

About the program

This scheme provides zero-interest loans to help with the costs of energy-efficient upgrades.

Brighte is our partner and loan provider for the scheme.

If you're eligible, you can get a loan from $2,000 to $15,000. You can repay the loan over up to 10 years.

The scheme is open to new applications.

How it works

If you're eligible, you can get a loan from $2,000 to $15,000 to buy energy-efficient products. These include:

  • rooftop solar panels

  • household battery storage systems

  • electric heating and cooling systems

  • hot water heat pumps (HWHP)

  • electric stove tops

  • electric vehicles (cars)

  • electric vehicle charging infrastructure

  • ceiling insulation

  • installation costs for these products.

Over the life of the scheme, you can install one product or a bundle of products from the list of eligible products. Together, these can be valued at up to $15,000.

You may borrow more than $15,000 depending on your loan application credit check. The loan provider may charge interest on funds borrowed above the limit.

Your repayments will begin when you either:

  • install the product or system and it is operational

  • buy the electric vehicle.

You can apply for a loan under this scheme and a subsidy under another program, such as the Home Energy Support Program.

Home Energy Support: Rebates for Homeowners

Do you need help keeping your house warm in winter and cool in summer?

Do you want to reduce your energy bills as well as your carbon footprint?

If you are a homeowner with an Australian Government Pensioner Concession Card or Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card you could be eligible for rebates for sustainable home upgrades.

About the program

The Home Energy Support Program provides up to $5,000 in rebates for eligible homeowners to help with the upfront costs of installing energy-efficient products. This includes:

  1. one rebate of 50% of the total installation price, up to $2,500, for rooftop solar

  2. one rebate of 50% of the total installation price, up to $2,500, for:

    • reverse cycle heating and cooling

    • hot water heat pumps

    • electric stove tops and ovens

    • ceiling insulation

If eligible, you can combine the rebate with a zero-interest loan of up to $10,000 to help with the remaining costs.

Why it's important

The ACT has committed to net zero emissions by 2045. We’ve announced our intention to electrify our city and transition away from the use of fossil fuel gas by 2045. You can help us get there by installing and using efficient electric products. These rebates will make it easier to switch to products that are better for the environment.

If you’re looking for a place to start, you can use the CHOICE tool to make a personalised transition plan. This will tell you how much you can save on energy bills, how you can reduce your homes greenhouse gas emissions, and independent product recommendations.

Who can take part

To be eligible for a rebate, you must:

  • be a resident of the ACT

  • hold an Australian Government Pensioner Concession Card or Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card

  • own and live in the home where the product will be installed

  • have attended a free online Everyday Climate Choices workshop (a session that shows you how to apply and helps you with your choices).
